Totally Tamsen: Singapore Street Food

Singapore’s famed street food has often been replicated in the U.S. but seldom with favorable results. Tamsen gets a taste.

Singapore’s street food is an amalgamation of cultures (Chinese, Indian, Malay, Peranakan/Eurasian), a testament to the multi-faceted dynamics of the country and its food culture.

Street food recipes are passed down from generation to generation and in most cases the hawkers tend to specialize on one particular dish serving hundreds of dishes every day, a staggering output considering the high-level of consistency they produce for each dish.

Singapore’s street food scene can be found in many heritage districts such as historic Chinatown, Little India, Kampong Glam but also near towering skyscrapers and commercial and residential areas.

Top Chef contestant from this past season, Richard Blais became a fan favorite on the show – but viewers quickly fell in love with his spiky blonde hair and less than conventional methods in the kitchen. This summer, he has created an innovative and delicious treat – FROZEN POPCORNSICLES.

Blais loves popcorn, and wanted a way to make it even more enjoyable in hot weather – so after hand crafting a ball of delicious CheeseCorn and CaramelCrisp kernels, he deep freezes the entire thing, instantly, using billowing liquid nitrogen. The result is a deliciously intense burst of icy-cold flavor, followed by fogged breath.

Tamsen's Twist: Sports Museum

Tamsen took a trip to The Sports Museum of America (SmA), the nation's first and only interactive, multi-media all sports museum experience. As the first museum to pay tribute to the history and excitement of all sports, SmA has partnered with more than 60 single sports Halls of Fame, national governing bodies and other top athletic organizations, to showcase inspiring exhibits, memorabilia, stories and heroes that resonate with fans of all ages.

In addition to hosting the first women’s sports hall of fame, SmA will also be the new permanent home of the Billie Jean King International Women’s Sports Center and the legendary Heisman Trophy and annual presentation.

Located at 26 Broadway, in the heart of Lower Manhattan and at the corner of Broadway and Beaver Streets, SmA will be steps away from the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island ferries, Wall Street, South Street Seaport and the 9/11 memorial currently underway.
