Sal Marchiano

August 14, 2008

Sal Marchiano, the sports anchor for the CW11 News At Ten, has been reporting sports on New York television for 40 years.

Brooklyn-born and bred, Sal has always worked in the New York metropolitan area. In 1963, after graduating from Fordham University, Sal began his sports casting career on WJRZ-AM in Newark, New Jersey. Four years later, in 1967, he won an audition at WCBS-TV and became a weekend anchor and sports reporter for main anchor Frank Gifford. During the next four years, Sal also hosted daily sportscasts on the Mutual Radio Network and WNEW-AM. In 1971, Sal followed Gifford to WABC-TV, where he was a weekend anchor and then nightly anchor. During the next nine years, he was also a regular contributor to ABC's Wide World of Sports as a correspondent and ringside boxing host. He also did play-by-play of college football and major league baseball for ABC Sports. During the 1970's, he also anchored a daily morning sportscast on ABC-Radio and was Howard Cosell's backup for his nightly radio network programs.

In 1979, Sal returned to WCBS-TV for one year as a nightly anchor and then joined the original cast at ESPN in 1980 as a Sportscenter anchor and for boxing blow-by-blow. In 1983, Sal joined WNBC-TV as a weekend sports anchor for the next eleven years. In 1994, Sal became the weekend sports anchor for WPIX-TV. In March of 1995, Sal became the main sports anchor for the station.

Over his five decades reporting sports, Sal has interview icons like Muhammad Ali, Vince Lombardi, Mickey Mantle, Joe Namath and Billie Jean King. He has interviewed every Yankees manager from Ralph Houk to Joe Torre and every Mets manager from Casey Stengel to Willie Randolph.

Throughout his career, Sal has covered some of sports' greatest games and events. Sal has witnessed and reported the first Super Bowl, the Jets only championship in 1969, the Knicks' only two championships in 1969 and 1973, both Mets' championships in 1969 and 1986, every Yankees championship since 1977, the Giants' two championships in the 80's, Secretariat sweeping the Triple Crown races in 1973, all three Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier world heavyweight championship fights in the '70s, the Nets' two ABA championships in the 70's, the Islanders' four straight Stanley Cups in the early 80s, the Devils' three Stanley Cups, and the Rangers breaking the 54-year curse and winning the Stanley cup in 1994.

He earned a Bachelor of Social Science Degree in Communication Arts from Fordham University and was the recipient of an Ellis Island Medal of Honor and two Emmy awards for excellence in broadcast news while at WPIX-TV. Sal's published memoir "In My Rear View Mirror" is a collection of profiles, memorable games and prize fights during his forty years of sports reporting.
